LASST Summer Fellowship

Join the fight for safer science and technology

Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology (LASST) is launching an exciting new opportunity for law students and legal professionals who want to use their skills to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. The organization’s inaugural Summer Fellowship program offers a unique chance to work at the intersection of law, technology, and global catastrophic risk prevention.

What is LASST?

Founded in 2024, LASST is a fully remote organization dedicated to using legal advocacy to make advances in science and technology safer for people and the planet. The team focuses on preventing man-made pandemics, AI-induced catastrophes, and other global calamities that could result from unsafe or misused science and technology.

The Fellowship Experience

The LASST Summer Fellowship is a 10-week paid program running from June 1 to August 7, 2026 (dates are flexible). Fellows become embedded members of the legal team, working on real projects that directly impact the organization’s advocacy and litigation strategies.

What you’ll do:

  • Conduct Applied Research: Dive deep into emerging legal and regulatory issues surrounding biotechnology and AI governance. Your research won’t sit on a shelf – it will directly support ongoing LASST initiatives.
  • Shape Strategy: Participate in strategy meetings where your analysis and insights will help determine LASST’s advocacy agenda and potential litigation approaches.
  • Build Your Network: Attend external briefings and conferences, and connect with the entire LASST team during an in-person co-working session in New York City in July.
  • Create Lasting Impact: Produce a major deliverable, such as a white paper or legal research memo, to be used externally or for internal strategy development.

Who Should Apply?

LASST is looking for incoming 2Ls or higher, including recent law school graduates and practicing attorneys considering a transition into technology law and policy. The ideal candidate is creative, collaborative, proactive, and able to work both independently and as part of a small team.

While not required, demonstrated interest in biosecurity, AI safety, or science and technology policy is a plus. Experience with tools like LexisNexis, Asana, and Slack is also valuable.

Compensation and Logistics

Fellows work full-time (40 hours per week) and receive an annual salary of $60,000, pro-rated to $5,000 per month pre-tax. The position is fully remote, allowing you to work from anywhere in the United States (or internationally, provided you can work overlapping hours with the US East Coast). The role does include at least two travel opportunities during the summer.

How to Apply

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter, resume, unofficial transcript, and answers to two questions about emerging technology risks and personal challenges. The application deadline is 11:59 PM Eastern on March 1, 2026.

The application questions ask you to:

  1. What is one risk in AI or biotechnology that you think is currently under-addressed by the legal system, and what role—if any—should impact litigation play in addressing it?
  2. What aspect of working on emerging technology risks do you think would challenge you the most, and how would you handle that challenge during the fellowship?

Each response should be no more than 250 words.

Send your complete application to [email protected].

Why This Matters

As science and technology advance at unprecedented rates, the legal frameworks governing these developments often lag behind. LASST’s work sits at this critical juncture, using legal tools to ensure that powerful technologies are developed and deployed responsibly. For law students and attorneys passionate about making a meaningful impact on global challenges, this fellowship offers a rare opportunity to contribute to work that could shape the future of technology governance.

Whether you’re interested in biosecurity, AI safety, or the broader field of technology law, the LASST Summer Fellowship provides hands-on experience, mentorship from experienced attorneys, and the chance to help build an organization dedicated to preventing catastrophic risks.

If you’re ready to think creatively about how law can safeguard humanity’s future, this could be the perfect summer opportunity.
